Writing:
To you, what is writing?
An attempt to put into words what cannot be put into words.
What started you into writing?
In second grade, Mrs. Downs had us write fictional stories on a given theme every day. I found that if I wrote something funny enough, I'd get laughs. I've been writing ever since.
How long have you been writing?
I think since second grade I've written various attempts at fiction, but
it wasn't until the tenth grade that I admitted to myself I would rather do nothing else.
Is writing a passion, and what do you get from it?
I don't have many passions, at least not until election years, but I do feel compelled, when I'm hurt by something, to redeem the pain by producing something I think has beauty.
What's your biggest inspiration?
Probably injustice.
Reading works from others:
favorite style:
I read more fiction than anything else, though well-written history has great allure for me as well.
favorite genre:
I like large novels that take risks with the reader, like Ulysses, Light In August, Bleak House, etc. I don't, however, believe I'm capable of writing one of those.
favorite authors:
James Joyce, Charles Dickens, John Updike, John Berryman, William Faulkner, Raymond Carver, John Irving
recommended works:
I just read, and was blown away by, Charles Dickens' Martin Chuzzlewit.
Going places:
where's your favorite place to be in real life?
Any large library or bookstore. I also like coffee shops, though my stomach problems preclude partaking of their wares.
favorite net.locales:
locale 1: CBS Sportzone
locale 2: Internet Movie Database
locale 3: EFnet, where I often chat with friends I've had for years.
And Personally...
I'm trying to be a teacher, though paper paper paper everywhere gets in the way of teaching sometimes. I'd like to get my book to an agent sometime before next month (October), and I'd like to get to know Baton Rouge like I knew Fayetteville [AR] when I lived up there. I'd also like to get the bitterness that informs so much of What the Tornado Did behind me so that I can be happier than I am now.
